Zusammenfassung
Die Vereinigten Staaten sind die Wiege des Populismus. Er entstand aus Konflikten zwischen einer Farmer-Arbeiter-Koalition und der Regierung in Washington D.C., die Wurzeln dieser Fehden reichen jedoch bis in das 17. Jahrhundert zurück. In seiner Reinform war der Populismus ökonomischer Natur und weder klar als rechts noch als links zu verorten. In seiner rechten Form gesellte sich jedoch spätestens seit den 1950er-Jahren eine kulturelle Dimension zu dieser Ausprägung, die mitunter nativistische Züge aufweist. Im linken Populismus werden seit jeher ähnliche Missstände angesprochen, vor allem agitiert jene Bewegung gegen die Finanzelite sowie eine korrumpierte politische Klasse – diese hätten einen Verrat am Volk und dem Amerikanischen Traum begangen.

Charles Edward Coughlin war ein Priester, der in den 1930er-Jahren über das Radio eine große Masse an Menschen erreichte – bis zu 30 Millionen Zuhörer hatte er bei seinen Sendungen. Seine National Union for Social Justice war gegen politische und ökonomische Eliten gerichtet: Die gewöhnlichen Amerikaner würden von diesen ausgebeutet. Dabei standen jüdische Bänker stark im Kreuzfeuer Coughlins.
