Definition
Personalized medicine is defined as the application of the right treatment for the right patient, at the right dose and at the right time. Personalized medicine is therefore a model of the way medicine will evolve through the use of specific treatments and therapies best suited to an individual’s genotype and is driven by patient demand for safer and more effective medicines and therapies.
Characteristics
The concept of individualizing treatment is not new, and the study of hereditary influences on the response to drugs (pharmacogenetics) is reflected in the scientific literature from the 1960s. The number of articles published remained constant until 1996 when technical developments and new insights into the highly complex nature of many diseases resulted in the advent of pharmacogenomics.
