Definition
Recurrent brief depressive disorder (RBD) is a well-defined and prevalent mood disorder with an increased risk of suicidal behavior and significant clinical impairment (Angst 1994; Pezawas et al. 2003). The syndrome is defined by depressive episodes that occur at least monthly and last only a few days. RBD represents a distinct and frequent clinical diagnosis in ICD-10 (F38.1) (WHO 2010). In the recently published DSM-5 (311.1), RBD is featured in the category “other specified depressive disorder” together with short-duration depressive episodes and depressive syndromes with insufficient symptoms (APA 2013). In both diagnostic manuals, psychopathological symptoms required for the diagnosis of RBD are the same as for major depressive disorder (MDD) (WHO 2010; APA 2013).
