This term describes pharmaceutical compounds with endoparasitological and ectoparasitological activities. Avermectins (e.g., ivermectin) belong to the most developed class of endectocides being developed as a16-membered ring of macrolytic lactones by fermentation from an actinomycete (fungus). Ivermectin itself is a semisynthetic avermectin derivate being first licensed in 1981 for veterinary use. It was detected by the Japanese scientist Omura from Kitasato University at Tokyo, who got the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in the year 2015.
