Definition
The Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System is a multicenter, longitudinal, collaborative research project funded by the US Department of Health and Human Services National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR).
Current Knowledge
The TBI Model System project began with five centers in 1987 and subsequently expanded to 16 currently funded centers. Designation as a TBI Model System center results from a grant competition which occurs every 5 years. The primary goal of the TBI Model System project is to conduct research that contributes to evidence-based rehabilitation interventions which improve the lives of individuals with TBI. To achieve this goal, each center is expected to generate research from studies specific to the center, as well as through collaborative multicenter studies that include several TBI Model System sites.
