Historical Archaeology in Peru

Introduction

During the last 30 years, there has been an increasing interest in historical archaeology in Peru, covering topics that range from the everyday life of different groups to studies about changing landscapes through time. Until the 1980s, historical archaeology was not considered itself an independent field of study. Peruvian archaeologists focused mainly on prehispanic periods, leaving historical events (including the colonial, republican, and contemporaneous epochs) to anthropologists, ethnographers, and historians. Most efforts in what today would be defined as historical archaeology were oriented to support the interpretations made by historians and other specialists with data from material culture or even just treasure hunting (Hampe 1982; San Cristóbal and Guillén 1986).
