Introduction

Warren McCulloch (1898–1969) was a key researcher in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and physiology during the 1940s and 1950s. Although he contributed research to a number of disciplines, he is most notably recognized for his contributions to cybernetics and communications (Abraham 2003). Specifically, his work as professor and researcher at the University of Illinois afforded him the opportunity to develop his theory regarding “experimental epistemology,” the philosophical theory of knowledge which examines the relational, binary operations of neurons within the mind (Abraham 2003; Moreno-Diaz and Moreno-Diaz 2007). His research influenced von Bertalanffy’s (1969) General Systems Theory, the key theoretical foundation for the field of couples and family therapy. Additionally, his contributions continue to influence the fields of artificial intelligence and robotics among other disciplines and areas of research.
