Introduction

Karl Tomm is a Canadian psychiatrist, family therapist, theoretician, and professor.

Career

Karl Tomm completed his M.D. at the University of Alberta in 1963, and in 1969, he started his residency in psychiatry at the University of British Columbia. Dissatisfied with the individualistic and problem-focused medical model, Tomm decided to transfer to McMaster University to finish his residency in pursuit of a more systemic approach to working with families. After completing his residency, Karl Tomm continued at McMaster as a teaching fellow. In 1972, Tomm moved to Calgary and started the Family Therapy Program at the University of Calgary in 1973. Karl Tomm is currently a professor of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine in Alberta, Canada and the director of the Family Therapy Centre (Collins and Tomm 2009).
