Definition

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), also known as the Business Process Model and Notation, is a graphical notation for drawing business processes. It is proposed as a standard notation for drawing models understandable by different business users. BPMN aims to bridge the communication gap that frequently occurs between business process design and implementation. The language is similar to other informal notations such as UML activity diagrams and extended event-driven process chains.

Key Points

BPMN was initially developed by Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI). It is now being maintained by the Object Management Group (OMG) who released Version 2.0 in 2011 [1]. The intent of BPMN is to standardize a business process modeling notation in the face of many different modeling notations and viewpoints.
