About this book
The two volumes previously published under this title (2001 and 2012) have been well received and widely used by academics, teachers and educational professionals in the field. For the third edition, updated and reformulated to reflect progress and new themes in the ten years to 2021, a similar structure is planned for the Handbook, with the first section maintaining its previous focus on “History, Theory and Philosophy”; the second section developing “Fresh Perspectives on Policy Development”; the third section on “Newness and Innovation in Programmes and Practices” with the final section reframed to move on from critical appraisal to Reimaging the field for 21st Century Challenges. New topics and themes introduced in all sections will include the lifelong learning challenges associated with Climate Change, Digital World, Rise of Populism, Precarious Work, Learning Cities and Rural Development.
Among the Chapter authors, international coverage representing all continents is envisaged.
We aim to achieve a balance between established authors building on a strong platform of previous work to develop their themes and positions, with new generation authors bringing fresh ideas and perspectives. Each contribution will be expected to combine a review of pertinent literature with a well-grounded argument for a position on the topic – one which critically engages the field in debate and further research.
