Abstract

Nucleic acids are polymeric macromolecules having monomeric nucleotides joined through phosphodiester bonds. The main composition consists of nitrogen bases (purines, adenine “A” and guanine “G”; pyrimidines, thymine “T,” cytosine “‘C,” uracil “U”), sugars (oxyribose or deoxyribose), and phosphoric acid. Based on the type of sugar moiety, they are classified into two: ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Hydrolysis of these under stringent conditions yields nucleotide. The nucleotide on further hydrolysis gives nucleoside (sugar + bases) and phosphoric acid.
