Storage and Preservation of Plant Virus Cultures

Abstract

Viruses are obligate pathogens that cannot be cultured without living in host. Plant viruses require special preservation methods to ensure long-term viability/infectivity of the sample and to maintain the original characteristics. Usually symptomatic leaf tissue of virus-infected plants is taken and kept as original sample for future study purpose. Many different methods are employed for the storage of virus cultures like desiccation, freeze drying (lyophilization), freezing and low temperature storage in liquid nitrogen, which are discussed in this chapter.
