Protoplasma - Professor Thomas Cavalier-Smith’s last peer-reviewed work published in Protoplasma
Thomas Cavalier-Smith (1947-2021) was a biologist and Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford. Prof. Cavalier-Smith is noted for his contributions to the fields of taxonomic classification of organisms, cell evolution and genetics, and biology.
On 21 September 2020, Prof. Cavalier-Smith submitted a review manuscript to Protoplasma entitled “Ciliary transition zone evolution and the root of the eukaryote tree: implications for opisthokont origin and classification of kingdoms Protozoa, Plantae, and Fungi“. Sadly, he passed away before final revisions were made. The Editor-in-Chief of Protoplasma believes the article stands without these revisions and should be published. In memory of Prof. Cavalier-Smith’s significant contribution to evolutionary biology, his wife Ema Choa corresponded with Protoplasma and helped to make possible the publication of his last peer-reviewed work.
Protoplasma would like to highlight this review article – published in December 2021 – as well as 5 other articles Prof. Cavalier-Smith published with Protoplasma throughout his career:
