Carbon Neutrality - Special Issue: Hydrogen and Renewable Low Carbon Fuels

1. Overview

The increasing demand for energy and serious concerns on the environmental problems arising from the utilization of fossil fuels have led to the emergency and necessity of developing critical techniques and materials for green and sustainable low carbon energy sources. As a burgeoning low-carbon energy carrier, hydrogen has shown the advantages of high energy capacity, sustainability, and eco-friendliness, which is acknowledged as a viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels, especially the hydrogen made by the solar energy. What’s more, upgrading the fossil fuels by hydrogenation reactions and even the CO2 hydrogenation to form low carbon fuels could also contribute to the renewable energy agenda. Actually, the deployment of increasingly renewable low carbon energy options continues to expand rapidly in the last few years. However, there are also many critical fundamental issues need to be figured out to achieve the efficient production and utilization of low-carbon fuels and then promote the fulfillment of the goal of “carbon neutrality”.

In this special issue, we welcome contributions from scholars in various research fields to shed light on the main problems and share their research progresses associated with the low-carbon energy, including but not limited to the materials and techniques for hydrogen generation, storage, transportation and utilization, techniques for renewable fuels synthesis and utilization, photovoltaics, as well as the energy conversion and storage via electrochemical, photochemical and photoelectrochemical processes.  

2. Topic areas

We invite authors to submit Reviews, Original research articles, Comments, Short communications, Perspectives that focus on Hydrogen and Renewable Low Carbon Fuels.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Materials and techniques for hydrogen generation, storage, transportation and utilization.
  • Techniques for the synthesis of low-carbon fuels.
  • Electro-, photo- and photoelectro-catalysis for energy conversion and storage.

3. Submission process

Special issue articles are subject to the same review process and high standard as regular Carbon Neutrality articles.

Articles should be submitted using our online submission system (www.editorialmanager.com/lowc/default.aspx).  On the submission site, select this special issue in the "Additional Information" section.

4. Deadline for submissions

Deadline for manuscript submission is July 31, 2023. Submissions earlier than this date are encouraged. Carbon Neutrality will publish this focus collection incrementally. This means that the articles submitted early will be published as soon as they are accepted and prepared for publication, without being delayed waiting for other papers in the collection.
