Featured Article: Validating the accuracy of DL for the diagnosis of pneumonia on chest x-ray against a robust multimodal reference diagnosis: a post hoc analysis of two prospective studies

Hofmeister J, Garin N, Montet X, et al. (2024)

A DL model was trained to diagnose pneumonia and evaluated in two prospective pneumonia cohorts including 430 patients, with reference diagnosis determined by a multidisciplinary expert panel using multimodal data. Radiologists and DL showed a similar accuracy on CXR for both cohorts (p ≥ 0.269), higher than that of emergency physicians (p ≤ 0.022). Accuracy was higher for CT than for CXR readers including radiologists, clinicians, and DL (p < 0.001). The performance of AI models to identify pneumonia on CXRs was inferior to that previously reported but similar to that of radiologists and better than that of emergency physicians.

CALL FOR PAPERS: 7-Tesla neuro MRI: from research to clinic

Following the  success of the first thematic series entitled “Myocardial tissue characterization in ischemic heart disease”, European Radiology Experimental is now launching its second series, this time putting special focus on “7-tesla neuro MRI: from research to clinic”.

The guest editors of this thematic series, Professors Luca Roccatagliata (Genoa/Italy) and Mirco Cosottini (Pisa/Italy), have carefully curated three articles that describe the state of the art of ultra-high field MRI neuroimaging studies with related clinical applications, and have contributed to the series by providing an insightful editorial of their own.

This is the second thematic series launched by European Radiology Experimental which is now open for further submissions on this topic! You can access all articles and learn more about this thematic series here.

Peer Review Process

As of January 9, 2023, European Radiology Experimental and the whole ESR Journal Family operates a single-blinded peer review process, where manuscripts sent to reviewers are no longer anonymized or blinded, but reviewers’ names will continue to be unknown to authors.

  1. Authors: Cristian Giuseppe Monaco, Federico Zaottini, Simone Schiaffino, Alessandro Villa, Gianmarco Della Pepa, Luca Alessandro Carbonaro, Laura Menicagli, Andrea Cozzi, Serena Carriero, Francesco Arpaia, Giovanni Di Leo, Davide Astengo, Ilan Rosenberg and Francesco Sardanelli

Aims and scope

European Radiology Experimental is a fully open access official journal of the European Society of Radiology. Its mission is to adhere to the multidisciplinary paradigm of the 21st century, fostering a strong connection between radiology in the experimental setting and basic science. Research on phantom studies, cell models and radiobiology, animal models, new modalities/techniques (e.g., MR sequences or spectral CT applications, molecular, hybrid, and optical imaging), novel contrast materials, tracers, and probes are welcome. Other topics fully considered are: 3D-modelling, printing, and simulation; advanced teleradiology (e.g., virtual physician-patient interaction); novel image reconstruction algorithms and post-processing.
