Background

Kidney disease is a major public health issue and can be defined as a functional and/or structural abnormality of the kidneys with significant implications for health. It encompasses acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, regardless of whether renal replacement therapy (such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplant) is indicated.

In recent decades, there has been a substantial increase in new evidence related to the management of nutritional and metabolic aspects of kidney disease. This progress has led to improved nutritional strategies and recommendations.

However, given the diverse conditions within the spectrum of kidney disease—including variations in severity, etiology, presence of comorbidities, and treatment approaches—providing effective nutritional care remains a significant challenge. Therefore, a deeper understanding of relevant topics related to food, metabolism, and nutrition in kidney disease is essential.

Scope

This collection seeks to delve into the current understanding of the impact of diet, metabolism, and nutrition on kidney disease. Additionally, it aims to foster new insights and enhance existing knowledge in this field.

We invite manuscripts that explore topics and issues concerning diet, metabolism, and nutrition in kidney disease. These topics include, but are not limited to, the following disease conditions (across all stages of life):

  • chronic kidney disease
  • dialysis methods
  • acute kidney injury
  • kidney transplantation

Suggested areas of focus include (but are not limited to):

  1. Problems Associated with Ultra-Processed Foods: Addressing the negative effects of ultra-processed foods on human health and the environment.
  2. Food Insecurity and Equity: Examining issues related to food insecurity and disparities in access to nutritious food.
  3. Eating Habits and Dietary Patterns: Investigating how dietary choices impact kidney health.
  4. Health-Related Quality of Life: Understanding the relationship between kidney disease and overall well-being.
  5. Specific Nutritional Interventions: Exploring exercise and pharmacotherapies to prevent or treat nutritional abnormalities.
  6. Assessment and Treatment of Malnutrition: Addressing protein-energy wasting, sarcopenia, frailty, and obesity.
  7. Vitamins and Micronutrients: Considering their role in kidney health.
  8. Intestinal Microbiome: Exploring its impact on renal function.

We invite submissions across various research methodologies, including:

Clinical Trials: Both randomized and non-randomized trials

Observational Studies: Prospective or retrospective cohort studies

Reviews: Narrative, integrative, or systematic reviews
