Journal of Social and Economic Development - Announcement of Special Issue on Elderly Care - Status, Challenges and Opportunities

This special issue focuses on the issues in elderly care particularly the physical and mental health care which plays a major role in the life of the elderly persons. With a rapid increase in the population of the elderly, there is a growing number of problems with their health, especially with chronic health problems and the need for both short- and long-term care. The bedridden and the long-term care elderly patients often suffer from isolation which leads to serious mental health and physiological health problems. Familial care and care services by other means should make an effective step to take care of the elderly which instigate healthy aging in place. Interestingly, the Health Care Index Score 2023 which measures the quality of the health care systems in different countries, says that Taiwan scored 85.9 as the best elderly care country, out of 94 countries recorded in the 2023 Health Care Index Score and Asia is the best elderly care by continent. Though elderly care is given much priority in the world, many countries struggle to offer elderly care with dignity. Digital kinning is a new practice followed for the well-being of older migrants in Australia which often requires the facilitation of others to perform their digital interaction and intrinsically brings each other’s existence. This special issue not only highlights the various issues relevant to elderly care but also provides emerging trends in the field of care and support.

The Special Issue is the outcome of the First International Conference on “Care for Older Adults Amidst COVID-19” organized by The International Institute of Migration and Development (IIMAD), Trivandrum, Kerala, India held during 19-20 December 2022. From the Conference, the articles addressing the issues and challenges in the elderly care viz., physical, mental, socio-economic aspects, and with the care givers’ problems have been considered. Submission to this special issue is strictly by invitation only.

This special issue identifies the status of care and support issues, challenges of the elderly and the trends in the elderly care in the pandemic and the post pandemic period. It broadly contributes to the elderly care issues to the existing literature into five broad areas: physical health care and elder issues, psychological health care and elder issues, elderly issues relevant to employment, migration and the left behind elderly care issues and finally trends in elderly health care.
