The Academic Psychiatry Trainee Editorial Fellowship is an opportunity for psychiatry residents and fellows with demonstrated interest in education, scholarship, and leadership to expand their skills in scholarly publication. During this 1-year, unfunded, working fellowship, trainees in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education will learn about and participate in peer reviewing, decision making, and editorial writing for an academic medical journal.

Duties

  • Attend an orientation meeting and peer review training session
  • Peer review manuscripts submitted to Academic Psychiatry with a senior editorial mentor from the journal’s editorial board
  • After demonstrating facility with the peer review process, shadow and collaborate with a journal editor from evaluation of new manuscript submissions through subsequent revisions to the final publication decisions
  • Co-author with editorial mentors an editorial on a topic chosen by the fellow for publication in the journal
  • Participate in meetings with the editors at various occasions throughout the fellowship

Eligibility at the time of application

  • Resident in postgraduate year 3 or 4 or Fellow in any psychiatry subspecialty at the time of application
  • Demonstrated track record of interest in teaching, scholarly presentation(s), or scholarly publication(s)

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of recommendation from program director or mentor attesting that the trainee will be supported in fulfilling all the required duties of the fellowship
  • 500-word proposal for an editorial to be developed during the fellowship for the journal

Selection Criteria

The selection committee will consider the following factors:

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to a career in academic psychiatry
  • Demonstrated interest in academic writing
  • Demonstrated interest in teaching
  • The likely impact of the fellowship on the career of the applicant
