Aims and scope

The Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education (JMTE) is an international journal dedicated to advancing global research on the education and professional development of mathematics teachers, as well as on the broader context of mathematics teaching. Its international focus emphasises the importance of cultural, social and institutional contexts in shaping the learning of mathematics teachers and, by extension, the mathematics learning of their students. This emphasis acknowledges that these diverse contexts also influence researchers and their research into mathematics teacher education.

JMTE focuses on the continuum of professional development of mathematics teachers and mathematics teacher educators. The journal welcomes critical analyses of particular programmes, development initiatives, assessment methods and policy matters related to mathematics teaching in a variety of settings. It encourages submissions that use a wide range of research paradigms, particularly those that extend beyond the traditionally dominant approaches in the field.

All contributions to JMTE should address issues and questions of international significance and concern. It is essential that papers submitted to JMTE are accessible and understandable to an international audience, ensuring relevance and engagement across diverse cultural and educational landscapes.

To be considered for publication in JMTE, submissions need to:

(1) Demonstrate the relevance and significance of the research problem or questions by situating them within the broader international scholarly work;
(2) Where relevant, reference scholarly work from a diverse range of geographical contexts, ensuring the inclusion of perspectives from and across different regions (both the Global North and the Global South); and
(3) Offer sufficient background information and context to make the local dimensions understandable and relevant to scholars from various regions of the world.

Manuscripts may be submitted to one of three sections of JMTE:
  1. Research papers: reflect the main focuses of the journal identified above and should be of more than local or national interest. Research papers can include empirical studies, philosophical, methodological, and historical analyses, literature reviews and theoretical discussions. (10,000 words)
  2. Commentary papers: reflect on and guide the development of mathematics teacher education research. They may comment on mathematics teacher education programmes and approaches located in particular national or community contexts that have wider interest or influence. (5,000 words)
  3. Reader responses: should be short contributions; for example, offering a constructive but critical response to a paper published in JMTE or developing a theoretical idea. Critiques of reports or books are welcome. (3,000 words)

Authors should state clearly the section to which they are submitting a manuscript.
The maximum word lengths in brackets exclude references, figures and tables. All submissions are rigorously peer-reviewed.
