Submission Status: Open   |   Submission deadline: 31 December 2024

Description
Urban underground spaces, including tunnels and metro systems, are integral components of modern urban infrastructure. They facilitate daily transportation, serving as bloodlines that support the dynamic flow of urban life. However, the enclosed nature of these spaces, combined with the high density of users and complex environments, makes them particularly vulnerable to fire incidents. The unique challenges posed by underground space and tunnel fires demand innovative solutions that harness the latest advancements in technology. These technologies are expected to bring new vision to the prevention, detection, and management of fire incidents, offering unprecedented opportunities to improve safety and mitigate risks in tunnel and underground spaces. This special issue will focus on novel concepts, applications, and perspectives of fire modelling and firefighting technologies in underground space.

Submission guidelines
All papers must be prepared in accordance with the Submission Guidelines. Authors should submit through the online submission site and select article type “SI – "Advances in Tunnel Fire Safety".

Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work, relevant to one of the topics of the Special Issue. All submitted papers will be evaluated on the basis of relevance, significance of contribution, technical quality, scholarship, and quality of presentation, by at least two independent reviewers. It is the policy of the journal that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Final decisions on all papers are made by the Editor-in-Chief.

Meet the Guest Editors:
New Content ItemDr. Tianhang Zhang is a post-doctoral research fellow at Zhejiang University, specializing in the study of AI-driven smart firefighting and tunnel fire dynamics. He received his Ph.D. degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2023. He was elected as the SFPE GCI Research Fellow in the working group of Digitalization, Artificial Intelligence, & Cybersecurity. He also won the Best Paper Award of 9th International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security (ISTSS, 2021) and Best Presentation Award Nomination of 3rd Digital Twin International Conference (DTIC, 2023).

New Content ItemDr. Yuxin Zhang is a research assistant professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and lead the smart evacuation group in the fire lab currently. She obtained both her bachelor and doctoral degree at Tongji University, in tunneling engineering and fire safety. Her research focuses on fire safety, evacuation, and rescue strategies, with a particular focus on understanding human behavior in emergency situations within underground spaces. She also works on fire dynamics and smart firefighting in complex environment and the influence on human activities.

New Content ItemDr. Ricky Carvel is Assistant Director of Learning and Teaching, and Senior Lecturer in Fire Dynamics at the School of Engineering, University of Edinburgh, specializing in tunnel safety, fire safety and fire modelling. He is co-editor of “The Handbook of Tunnel Fire Safety”. He serves as an editorial board member of Fire Technology, and was the associate editor of Fire Safety Journal (2010-2015). He won the Best Paper Award at the 6th International Symposium on Tunnel Safety and Security (ISTSS, 2014), and the “ISTSS Achievement Award 2018” at 8th International Symposium on Tunnel Safety, respectively.
