Molecular indexing against Mandariviruses and Citrus greening bacterium in Kinnow mandarin nurseries in Punjab

Abstract

Kinnow mandarin is one of the most important citrus species cultivated in northern India. The graft transmissible pathogens viz., Indian citrus ringspot virus (ICRSV), Citrus yellow vein clearing virus (CYVCV) and Citrus greening bacterium (CGB) (Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus; CLas) are causing qualitative and quantitative losses in Kinnow. Surveys were undertaken in 2018–19 of major citrus growing districts of Indian Punjab. Seventeen NHM certified, 2–4 star rated nurseries and 7 orchards were surveyed in Fazilka, Hoshiarpur and Sri Muktsar Sahib. Molecular indexing via PCR and RT-PCR was carried out on all the samples collected. RT-PCR results revealed that prevalence of ICRSV and CYVCV was 57.14 and 5% respectively in the surveyed districts. Citrus greening bacterium was reported to be around 54.28% prevalent. This study necessities the regular monitoring of nurseries to ensure distribution of disease free planting material.
