Abstract
Leaf rolling, necrosis and apical bud proliferation symptoms were recorded on lychee plants at Bhatpar Rani (Deoria district) and Gorakhpur (Gorakhpur district) of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India, in 2013–2014. Symptomatic lychee leaf samples were analyzed for phytoplasma association by nested PCR assays which yielded ~1.2 kb amplicons with R16F2n/R16R2 primer pair from the symptomatic samples of both the places. Pairwise sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences of lychee phytoplasma strains from Deoria and Gorakhpur confirmed the association of two groups (16SrXI and 16SrXIV) of phytoplasmas. Virtual analysis of 16S rDNA sequences of both the lychee phytoplasma strains classified them as 16SrXI-D (Deoria) and 16SrXIV-A (Gorakhpur) subgroups, which are new reports to the world.
