Abstract

Bell metal, also known as Kanh/Kansha in India, is a specific binary Cu-Sn alloy containing 20–25% Sn (wt. basis) as major alloying elements, is the most popular ancient material in bells, utensils and artifacts manufacturing industries due to its golden appearance and excellent reverberating quality. In this study, manufacturing process practiced in different parts for production of bell metal products has been critically reviewed. Properties of bell metal product particularly microstructure, hardness and fracture strength of products manufactured in Sarthebari, Assam, India, have been reported. From this study, it is found that the β phase dominantly controls the hardness and fracture strength of bell metal products. In addition, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve provides several important insights of the present manufacturing process practiced in Sarthebari and other parts of the world. The results presented in this paper are very useful in devising an improvised manufacturing process for production of bell metal products for ensuring better quality.
