Summary
Physical activity is an important tool in health promotion as well as in the prevention of diseases and premature death. For health promotion at a community level an evidencebased, structured approach is necessary, based on international recommendations and actual amount of physical activity in the population. Health targets should be defined, the available resources investigated and strategies to achieve the goals specified, implemented and evaluated. For adults, scientific societies recommend endurance activities of moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week or at a higher intensity for 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week. Furthermore resistance training twice a week is recommended. For older people the importance of strength- and balance training is emphasized by international societies. Children and adolescents should be physically active for at least one hour per day. It cannot be clearly verified how much these recommendation are realized in the population, based on the current Austrian data, however, in general the Austrians seem to be too inactive. More favourable circumstances should be created in Austria, based on international recommendations, which facilitate access to effective health promoting physical activity, especially for individuals who would profit most from it. These include people with a sedentary lifestyle, people with high cardiovascular risk, people in poor socio-economic circumstances and older people.
