Abstract

The diet of the thornback guitarfish Platyrhinoidis triseriata is described from 31 specimens (22 females and 9 males; 30.9–53 cm total length) collected from the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula. According to the Prey-Specific Index of Relative Importance (%PSIRI), the main prey were pelagic red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (25.5%), Portunus xantusii (25.5%), Squilla hancocki (7.1%), and Penaeus spp. (3.6%). Fishes were also observed in the diet (Paralichthys californicus, Porichthys spp., family Congridae). The estimated trophic level was 3.5, indicating that P. triseriata is a secondary consumer that predates benthic organisms. This is the first study on the diet of P. triseriata.
