Abstract

What’s in a nudge? Ten recommendations for experimenting with nudges in public health

The present article discusses ten recommendations for experimenting with nudges in public health, derived from meetings with researchers, professionals and policy makers in public health in the Netherlands. These recommendations involve, amongst others, a clear and practical definition of what nudges entail, and addresses issues related to what extent nudging may be manipulative, the requirement of transparency, and what types of health behavior and settings lend themselves for nudging. The general overall conclusion conveys great enthusiasm amongst Dutch public health experts for nudges as an alternative for existing interventions because they respect the typical (automatic) way of how individuals make decisions about health. In view of the prominent role of behavioral insights for public health policy making, psychologists should involve themselves more with nudging interventions. Keywords: nudging, healthy choices, public health, field experiments
