Abstract
This article deals with immigrants’ naturalization decisions and their effects on socioeconomic integration. The research questions are the following: Is cultural integration of immigrants positively related to naturalization? Does naturalization exert a positive influence on the employment integration of immigrants in the Netherlands? Using data from the ‘Social position and Use of Public Facilities by Migrants’ (SPVA) survey for the year 2002, we concentrate our analysis on Turks and Moroccans. The results of multivariate analyses indicate that naturalization of Turks and Moroccans in the Netherlands is not positively related to cultural integration nor to employment integration. These unexpected findings can be explained by the Dutch rules on naturalization.
Résumé
Cet article porte sur les décisions que prennent les immigrants quant à la naturalisation et les effets de celles-ci sur l’intégration socioéconomique. La recherche tentait de répondre aux questions suivantes: Existe-t-il une corrélation directe entre l’intégration culturelle des immigrants et la naturalisation? La naturalisation exerce-t-elle une influence positive sur l’intégration professionnelle des immigrants aux Pays-bas? Notre analyse s’appuie sur les données tirées de l’enquête de 2002 sur la position sociale et l’utilisation du provision collectives par les immigrants (Social Position and Use of Public Facilities by Migrants) et porte sur les Turcs et les Marocains. Les analyses multivariables indiquent que la naturalisation des Turcs et des Marocains aux Pays-Bas n’entretient pas de corrélation directe avec l’intégration culturelle, ni avec l’intégration professionnelle. Ces résultats inattendus s’expliquent par les lois des Pays-Bas sur la naturalisation.
