IDEFICS. Causes and prevention of diet- and lifestyle-related disorders in children

Zusammenfassung

Die geänderte Lebensumwelt von Kindern in Europa spiegelt sich u. a. in einem zunehmend ungesunden Ernährungsverhalten und einer weitgehend sitzenden Lebensweise wider. Ungünstige Ernährung und fehlende körperliche Aktivität spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in der Entwicklung kindlichen Übergewichts, kindlicher Adipositas und damit zusammenhängender Stoffwechselstörungen, wie beispielsweise metabolisches Syndrom, sowie Diabetes, Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen und Beeinträchtigungen des Bewegungsapparates. Um die Epidemie dieser ernährungs- und lebensstilbedingten Erkrankungen zu stoppen, sind leistungsfähige evidenzbasierte Ansätze erforderlich.

Diese stehen im Fokus von IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants), eines Integrierten Projekts, das mit einer Laufzeit von 5 Jahren im 6. Forschungsrahmenprogramm der Europäischen Union gefördert wird. Das IDEFICS-Konsortium besteht aus 23 europäischen Forschungseinrichtungen einschließlich klein- und mittelständischer Unternehmen.

Im Mittelpunkt der IDEFICS-Studie stehen die Ursachen ausgewählter Erkrankungen bei 2- bis 10-jährigen Kindern. In diesem Zusammenhang von Interesse sind auch die individuelle geschmackssensorische Wahrnehmung und weitere Mechanismen der Lebensmittelwahl und des Konsumverhaltens. Parallel dazu werden Strategien zur Primärprävention ernährungs- und lebensstilbedingter Erkrankungen entwickelt und evaluiert. Die Projektergebnisse sollen in einen Entwurf einheitlicher europäischer Empfehlungen zu Ernährung und Lebensstil einfließen, die der Gesundheitsförderung und Krankheitsprävention bei Kindern dienen.

Abstract

The environment of children has drastically changed in Europe during the last decades as reflected in unhealthy dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Nutrition obviously plays a part in the development of overweight and obesity in childhood. However, dietary factors and physical activity are also involved in the development of related metabolic disorders like syndrome X, and diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal disorders. To stop the resulting epidemic of diet- and lifestyle-induced morbidity, efficient evidence-based approaches are needed.

These issues are the focus of IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants), an Integrated Project within the 6th framework program of the European Union. The IDEFICS consortium comprises 23 research centers and includes small or medium enterprises across Europe.

One part of the IDEFICS study will investigate the etiology of selected diet- and lifestyle-related diseases in 2- to 10-year-old children. The impact of sensory taste perception and other mechanisms of children’s food choices and consumer behavior will be studied in this context. Another part of the IDEFICS study will develop and evaluate strategies for the primary prevention of diet- and lifestyle-related diseases. The results of the project shall contribute to the development of harmonized European guidelines on diet and lifestyle for health promotion and disease prevention in children.
