Abstract
Background
This retrospective study was done to analyse the risk factors associated with carotid artery disease, its pattern, symptomatology of the disease, associated diseases and the results of surgical treatment
Methods
From April 2005 to March 2010 fourteen patients underwent Carotid Endarterectomy(CEA) with or without Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting(CABG).Their mean age, sex, symptomatology, associated diseases, surgical technique, operative mortality(early mortality), incidence of cerebrovascular accidents, hospital stay, mid-term mortality have been evaluated.
Results
Thirteen patients underwent CEA with CABG and 1 patient underwent CEA alone. Mean age of the patients in the study was 65.1 ± 6.3 years .Mean clamp time of the carotid artery was 19.6 ± 1.9 min. None of the patients had stroke .One patient had myocardial ischemia in the postoperative period which required re-exploration. Two patients required use of intra aortic balloon pump for low cardiac output. There was no operative mortality. Follow up was completed for 13 patients (92.9%) with a mean follow up of 1.6 ± 1.2 years .None of the patients had stroke.
Conclusion
Many patients of significant carotid disease are asymptomatic. Concomitant CEA with CABG is safe and effective procedure. Hypertension has a strong association with combined carotid and coronary artery disease
