Abstract

Effect of different (2, 2.5, 3)mol. % yttria inside zirconia matrix alongside the effect of 3 mol. % Ytria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) inside the alumina matrix is studied. High hardness and fracture toughness has been observed for 3 mol. % Yttria reinforced inside zirconia matrix. Neural role of mol. % on grain growth and density, but significantly affect the phases. More amount of metastable tetragonal phases augments more toughening phenomenon that provides a beneficial effect on mechanical properties. Investigation on tribological properties reported an improvement in COF by 18 % for ZTA, compared to Alumina. This improvement is allied with the toughening phenomenon accompanied by softer YSZ particles acting as the second phase. The astral analysis of the wear track revealed high abrasions, fracture (formation of micro-cracks), grain pullout, and laminar removal of grains are the possible cause of wear.
