Abstract
The Social Construction of Performance in Lessons. The differences in the subject specific performance of pupils are usually explained on the basis of different cognitive dispositions, which are mediated by individual performance motivation. From a micro-sociological perspective, however, differences can be seen as (inter)subjective constructions. These constructions and the mechanisms of their production are the sub-ject of this article. The framework is provided by Bernstein’s (1990, 1996) developed ecucation sociological theory of regulative principles and we analyze interpretative pas-sages from mathematic lessons at the start of the fifth school year. The micro-sociological focus is on whether and how teachers clarify to their pupils what they have to achieve to be seen as high performers in lessons. We will show that performance ex-pectations in lessons are not only related to subject-specific cognitive abilities and conc-lude on this basis that making performance disparities explicit is linked to a process of coding and decoding of (also subject-specific) behavioral expectations.
Notes
(Cooper/Harries 2002).
