Abstract
Using the approach of actor-structure dynamics developed by Schimank and thus conceptualizing mass media logic as a highly complex construct of interacting structures, the paper asks how German newspapers construct media reality today. A qualitative content analysis of three dailies (Süddeutsche Zeitung, Münchner Merkur, Bild) comparing the reporting on ten different event types over time provides answers to this question. The study shows, first, that mass media offers follow a conceptual logic that can change over time since it depends on actors’ constellations, structures of expectations, and structures of evaluations. Second, the German daily press is more commercialized today than it was some 40 years ago. To put it differently: today, the journalists select topics which promise general attention and present and interpret these topics in a manner that may allow to reach the widest possible audience.
