Abstract
The article addresses the research practice of behavioral economics in a laboratory setting. During the experimental process, the practice of the scientists and the material equipment of the laboratory create a specifically scientific and technically structured environment for the scientific object to be studied by the behavioral economic researchers: the rational actor. In line with the ethnomethodological procedural perspective, what goes on inside the experimental laboratory is understood as a “doing”, directing the attention to the practices generating this phenomenon. The empirical examples point out that the practices of the researchers have a performative influence on the participants and the situation in the laboratory. Special emphasis is on crisis situations, in which participants deviate from the behavioral expectations of the researchers. These situations show that the (economic) rational actor is not just observed by the researchers but simultaneously constructed in the situation of the experiment through practical and performative procedures and rules.
