Abstract
No region in the world has resisted as intensely to democratization of its political systems as the Middle East. The article first outlines the basic patterns of patrimonial and authoritarian rule in this region and then explains by five theses why democracy is rejected. It also analyses efforts to enforce democratic principles to the Middle East from outside and discusses the reactions of the oriental state to these pressures.
