Summary
Since the mid 1980s Supply Chain Management (SCM) has got tremendous attention in research and practice. The objective of this paper is to review the current state-of-the-art of empirical research on SCM. In total, about 90 empirical studies are identified and analyzed with respect to the management of the cooperation, the management of the material flow and the management of the information flow. The results of this research demonstrate that there is a wide range of empirical research on SCM and a peek of research effort on competitive advantages. Many research approaches are not well founded in theory. From a methodological point of view, cross sectional studies and (multi) case studies dominate the sample. Finally, the paper describes areas which future research could usefully address.
