Abstract
Introduction and methods
In view of the serious health risks and high costs to the healthcare system of tobacco consumption, getting people to give up smoking is an important element in preventive medicine. This paper gives an overview of the health-economic aspects of nicotine addiction and of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the main withdrawal treatments. A major emphasis of the research is on the possible consequences of reimbursing the costs of nicotine withdrawal therapies.
Results
Several studies confirming the cost-effectiveness of pharmacological therapies were identified. The use of these therapies can benefit the withdrawal process. Reimbursement for tobacco addiction treatment could lead to a considerable increase in the number of successful attempts to give up.
Discussion
Financial implications for the healthcare system are discussed with reference to international experience. The last few years have seen early positive experiences in the United Kingdom.
Conclusions
Finance for nicotine withdrawal therapies in association with a comprehensive national strategy could make a contribution to reducing the number of smokers in Germany. In view of these results we wish to record our conviction that the chances and options offered by health insurance coverage of such cost-effective prevention should be thoroughly investigated.
