A tribute to Philip Barnett Bucky (1899–1957)

Father of centrifuge modeling in geomechanics

Abstract

The late Prof. Philip B. Bucky is recognized as a pioneer in centrifuge modeling (e.g., Cheney, Centrifuges in soil mechanics, Balkema: The Netherlands 1988). This tribute is prepared in his memorial for the technique that he proposed, which has now gone well beyond his imagination in the areas of application. A list containing Bucky’s major papers on centrifuge modeling is included in the references.

Notes

  1. The School of Mines at Columbia University, established in 1864, was the oldest among the schools of its kind in the United States. The School was well endowed and renamed Henry Krumb School of Mines a century later. The School of Mines is widely known as the beginning of the current School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS). Before the existing S.W. Mudd Building was completed in 1965, the engineering departments were housed in different separate buildings in the campus: Mining in Lewishon Hall, Civil Engineering in Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering in Pupin (Physics), among others. The existing Centrifuge Center [1] is located in the basement of Mudd Building. The construction of the centrifuge through a donation by Kajima Corporation, Japan, was completed in 2004.
