Abstract
The Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DNSG) of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) has published evidence-based nutritional recommendations for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. A German version of these guidelines has been adopted by the German Diabetes Association (DDG), the German Adiposity Association (DAG), the German Association for Nutritional Therapy (DGEM), the German Nutrition Association (DGE) and further professional scientific associations in Austria (ÖDG), Belgium and Switzerland. The evidence-based nutritional guidelines support a uniform and scientifically based approach in the nutritional treatment of persons with diabetes throughout Europe. A nutritional teaching programme based on them may assist physicians, dietitians and diabetes advisors in practical dietary counselling and training and thus contribute to the implementation of nutritional therapy for diabetes mellitus, increasing the likelihood that therapeutic goals will be achieved.
