Abstract
Barriers to innovation represent a research topic which is frequently cited but seldom investigated in depth. This article contains a systematic approach to this important subject for innovation management. The authors suggest classifying barriers to innovation using four dimensions (form of appearance, level of perception, origin, and time of appearance of a barrier). Individual, organizational, and task characteristics determine the barriers to innovation. Various theoretical perspectives are considered for the purpose of identification. The effect of barriers to innovation on individuals and on the innovation itself is also discussed, and the positive as well as negative aspects of barriers to innovation are shown. This article aims to create awareness of the complexity of barriers to innovation, with a view to developing points of departure for future research in order to deepen our theoretical understanding of these barriers.
