Abstract
The depletion of fossil fuel-based resources and concerns for increasing emissions of CO2 call for new ways of producing environmentally-friendly substitutes for motor fuels and chemicals. Thermo-chemical conversion of biomass and waste using gasification is a strong candidate to meet these challenges. For efficient and cost-effective application of this technique, novel solutions for hot gas cleaning are needed. This review highlights some important areas for improvement of upgrading technologies for pressurised fluidised bed gasification systems using biomass as a fuel.

The authors want to acknowledge the important contributions to the catalysis community made by Professor Anders Holmen at NTNU in Trondheim. Prof. Holmen has always been an enthusiastic driving force in catalysis, especially in natural gas conversion and related subjects. An increased understanding of the catalyst reactivity and stability in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is just one of the many examples of his important achievements. In the Nordic countries he has been invaluable in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere at our many Nordic symposia on catalysis. Happy Birthday Anders! We hope for many more prosperous years in catalysis, as well as in cross-country skiing in the beautiful Norwegian mountains.
