A model is presented to analyze the evolution of mechanical stresses in the vicinity of the coating–substrate interface under processing conditions. The model takes into account different mechanisms of stress formation, including the temperature and phase composition changes. It is shown that the coating stresses significantly exceed the strength limit of the material, with the main contribution coming from the changes in the composition.
