Arbutin Content in the Far-Eastern Species Serratula komarovii Iljin

  • Published:
Pharmaceutical Chemistry Journal Aims and scope

The biologically active compound arbutin (hydroquinone β-D-glucopyranoside) was isolated for the first time from leaves of Serratula komarovii Iljin growing in Primorsky Krai by solvent extraction (EtOH, 70%) and preparative column chromatography using silica gel (L 230 – 400 mesh) and gradient elution by mixtures of solvents (CCl4 and EtOH). The isolated compound was identified by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The arbutin contents in aerial organs (leaves, stems) of S. komarovii were determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP HPLC). The mass fraction of arbutin in leaves was 3.31 ± 0.30%; in stems, 0.49 ± 0.09%. This compound was not detected in aerial organs (leaves, stems) of S. manshurica Kitag.
