Influence of Modification of the Surface Layer by Penetrating Impurities on the Long-Term Strength of Zr–1% Nb Alloy

  • Published:
Materials Science Aims and scope

We study the influence of modification of the surface layer of a metal in gaseous atmospheres on the long-term strength of Zr–1% Nb alloy at room temperature (20°С). It is discovered that the procedures of treatment in oxygen-containing (580°С; 1.33 Pa; 0.5 h under a pressure of 1.33∙10–2 Pa , and τ = 2.5 h) and nitrogen-containing (580°С; 1.33∙10– 3Pa; 1 h under a nitrogen pressure of 1∙105 Pa , and τ = 9 h) atmospheres are accompanied by the formation of diffusion-hardened near-surface layers and lead to an increase in the long-term strength of annular specimens at room temperature on a base of 100 h as compared with the standard treatment in a vacuum (580°С; 1.33∙10–2 Pa , and 3 h).
