Abstract

A new multi-sphere spectrometer based on water moderator equipped with a high efficiency 6LiI(Eu) crystal scintillation detector was suggested to establish a reliable neutron spectrometer. The energy response matrix of these spectrometers was calculated from 0.01 to 20 MeV by applying the MCNPX Monte Carlo code. Simulations were done for six spheres with a diameter range of 2–18 in. These simulations included a detailed description of the geometry of the system. The obtained responses were parameterized as a function of sphere diameter by a log-normal function, and the parameters were calculated for 30 discrete neutron energies. The newly calculated energy responses were compared to polyethylene sphere responses. In other computations, the response of the water and polyethylene spheres exposed to 252Cf, 239Pu–Be and Po–Be neutron sources were calculated by Monte Carlo modeling.
