Abstract
Two ways to obtain a polyester from dimethylketene and acetone were investigated. On the one hand, the ring opening polymerization of 3,3,4,4-tetramethyl-2-oxetanone was tested but could not be achieved, which was explained by its steric hindrance. On the other hand, the direct anionic copolymerization between dimethylketene and acetone in toluene or dichloromethane at −60 °C was realized with a yield of respectively 82 and 72 %. The resulting polymer was exclusively composed of polyester units, and a reaction scheme was proposed and discussed. A molecular weight up to 8 400 g mol−1 with a polydispersity around 1.9 was obtained. Stable up to 209 °C under nitrogen, this polymer exhibited a Tg near 52 °C and a broad and complex endothermic peak attributed to crystallinity was observed with maxima at 139 and 171 °C. The crystallinity, measured by X-Ray diffraction, was close to 0.40.
