Preparation and characterization of shielding textiles to prevent infrared penetration with Ag thin films

Abstract

Silver (Ag) film with a thickness of 200 nm is deposited onto cotton and polyester fabric samples through magnetron sputtering and systematically investigated by using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) emissivity and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The physical properties of the coated fabrics are then evaluated by examining the IR emissivity, reflection/transmission rate, contact angle and ultraviolet protection factor value. It is found that the Ag coated fabrics have an IR reflection rate of 30–35%, IR emissivity value of about 0.7 and a maximum UPF value of 218. The Ag coated fabrics therefore can provide excellent protection from UV radiation and good shielding from IR radiation, which means that they are promising materials for textiles that provide shielding from IR penetration.
