Down Little Lon: An Introduction to the Casselden Place Archaeological Excavations, Melbourne

  • Published:
International Journal of Historical Archaeology Aims and scope Submit manuscript

In 2002 Melbourne’s Casselden Place excavation provided a window into the urban past opened by an innovative relationship between the development industry, heritage consultancy and La Trobe University. The project demonstrated that with the support of consent authorities and the co-operation of the development industry, collaborations between the academic world and heritage consultants could be highly successful. The Casselden Place Project made a significant contribution to the ‘slum debate’ in Australia and delivered an enhanced understanding of the cultural, social and scientific significance of an inner-city block, and shed new light on a notorious chapter in the city’s history.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This paper draws heavily on the Research Archive Report and other related reports prepared by Godden Mackay Logan Pty Ltd, Austral Archaeology and the Archaeology Program at La Trobe University for the Industry Superannuation Property Trust and Heritage Victoria. These reports embody and include the synthesizing and research efforts of Alan Mayne and Tim Murray, plus the work of the archaeologists at the site, particularly Excavation Director Graham Wilson and the Trench Supervisors and other members of the team involved in on site work and post-excavation analysis and reporting: Ilya Berelov, Peter Davies, Åsa Ferrier, Kevin Hickson, Anne Mackay, Maddy Maitri, Lyndon Patterson, Jenny Porter, Allison Simons, Andrew Sneddon, Zvonka Stanin, Cathy Tucker and Christine Williamson. Rudy Frank and Wei Ming of La Trobe University greatly assisted us during the reporting phase of the project.
