Abstract

The intra-specific variation in shell morphology of Baicalia carinata occupying Lake Baikal littoral and sublittoral zones was investigated. Random samples of B. carinata from 12 regions of the Lake were analyzed. It is suggested that specimens with sculptured shells are hybrids of B. carinata and B. dybowskiana or B. carinata and B. carinatocostata. Six phenotypes of “smooth” B. carinata were recognized on the basis of qualitative shell characters, up to three phenotypes (with one of them predominating) may be found in a region. It was shown that the size of this baicalid species varies in different regions of the Lake, which may be coincident with variation in intra-lacustrine environments – as there is clinal variability in many benthic ocean invertebrates.
