Notes

  1. ICS=(p+ui×e×c, where p represents the proposed use for a species; u indicates the number of parts used, from 1 to 7 (root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, seed, whole plant); i indicates the intensity with which a species is used, with values ranging from 1–5: 5 (intentionally maintained plant, primary production, commerce), 4 (high intensity of use, moderate commerce), 3 (medium intensity of use), 2 (low intensity of use, most known medicinal plants), and 1 (minimum intensity of use, least known medicinal plants); e indicates the exclusivity of use, with a value of 2 when a species is chosen, preferred, or when it is most important for a certain use, and a value of 1 when a species is a common resource for a certain use; c indicates the contemporaneity of the use, which has a value 2 if the species is currently used, and a value of 1 when it is no longer used (Silva, 1997).
