Abstract
An experimental assessment has been made of the conditions of sealing of detachable flanged joints with heat-expanded graphite (HEG) gaskets. Two types of gaskets have been investigated: HEG gaskets shielded (protected) by a thin corrosion-resistant steel plate and coiled gaskets (CG) containing coiled HEG and corrosion-resistant steel layers. Expressions have been obtained for determining the sealing coefficient (gasket factor) and the coefficient of diffusion of the medium being sealed through the gasket. It has been shown that the major amount of leakage of the air being sealed (more than 70%) is comprised of leakage through the gasket material. In this regard, more reliable is CG type of gaskets whose sealing capacity is more than thrice as high as that of gaskets made of HEG alone.
